Slieve Corbally Railway Overbridge

Case Study

The contract consisted of six rings of 14.5m wide x 5.85m high Banagher Precast Concrete Portal units plus ten H4a precast concrete parapet panels for the deck.

The bridge will be used as a farmers overpass over a live railway and was the first bridge to be designed to the Eurocodes as well as Iarnrod Eireann’s new framework contract. It was also the first portal to be made on the skew.

On the 15th of August 2011 Banagher Precast Concrete were awarded the contract to design, supply and deliver six rings of 14.5m wide x 5.85m high Banagher Precast Concrete Portal units plus ten H4a precast concrete parapet panels.

Our Eurocode design was approved by Roughan and O’Donovan in September 2011 and manufacture took place in October 2011, with delivery taking place over a two night railway possession on the 10th and 11th November 2011.

A full trial fit took place in Banagher prior to units being delivered to site as when dealing with rail possessions you need to be extra cautious.

The roof units weighed 55 tonne, the legs 10 tonne and the parapets 6 tonne each.
