Crossrail Bridge Middlegreen Road

Case Study

In late 2011 Banagher Precast Concrete tendered for the Middlegreen Road railway overbridge for Network Rail-Crossrail JV. In September 2012 HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction Ltd. were awarded the job.

The overbridge was designed and detail as a “Conarch System”, however when we met the contractor and his designer Hyder and proposed our own portal frame system that we have been using for several years with Irish Rail they got on board straight away. Not only did we reduce the weights for the contractor which reduced his crane and risk element we also provided them with much more straight forward construction techniques. In relation to Hyder they worked very closely with us in the design and detail phase and we got a revised design submitted and approved by the client Network Rail-Crossrail JV.

The job at first consisted of a twin cell portal but after demolition of the bridge in December 2012 the job then became a triple cell. We manufactures a total of 10nr portal frames from 6.0m to 10.0m internal span. We manufactured red brick faced parapet panels on a curve , fasia panels, cill beams and run on slabs.

The precast elements were delivered to site and installed over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend in 2013. The job was a complete success and we are in talks with Hyder and Hochtief to use the Banagher Precast Concrete Portal Frame on upcoming schemes.
