Abbey Bridge and Viaduct Replacement

Banagher Precast Concrete have completed the manufacture and delivery of all the Prestressed Concrete Bridge Beams for the Abbey Bridge and Viaduct replacement in Evesham Worcestershire.
This important project will ensure Evesham Town Centre keeps its vital link across the River Avon.

The existing Bridge was in poor repair and despite regular maintenance works, its condition continued to deteriorate, so a decision was made to replace the structure. The new structure will have a design life of 120 years.

The replacement Bridge is constructed of reinforced concrete arches supporting transverse steel beams and a reinforced concrete deck. The approach Viaduct deck consists of 180 Precast Prestressed Concrete Bridge Beams supported on reinforced concrete crossheads and columns. The beams used in the deck are MY1 Bridge Beams. The MY range of Bridge Beams was developed by Banagher Precast Concrete in 2007 as a more efficient beam for shorter spans up to 19m.

Our Design Department worked closely with the Main Contractor, Hochtief and the Designer, Atkins to modify the design in order to improve the buildability of the deck on site which worked out very well. With the length of each of the 180 beams being different the detailing of the job was critical. The close contact between Banagher, Hochtief and Atkins ensured that all went according to plan.
